Following the success of the Open House Tour last autumn, homeowners will be opening their doors again next week. This will allow others to literally step over the threshold to see a renovated staircase in person. During the Upstairs Open House Tour on Saturday 28 March, homeowners across the Netherlands will be opening their doors to show visitors how their staircases have been refurbished.
Last autumn, we were the first in the home furnishings sector to organise an open-house tour entirely dedicated to staircases. Visitors can see, feel and experience the impact of a staircase renovation in a real-life interior: from materials and finishes to lighting and the stories behind each staircase.
“Stairs are in plain sight and in use every day. That is precisely why they must be right in terms of design, quality and comfort,” says Rick Steyvers, managing director of Upstairs.
What makes this approach special is that visitors aren’t walking around a showroom, but are stepping over the threshold into people’s homes. This gives them a realistic idea of what a staircase renovation actually entails. Over 100 Upstairs customers are opening their doors and proudly showing off their
refurbished staircases. “It gave us the chance to see a staircase in real life and hear an objective opinion from other customers. We were even treated to a pastry and a cup of coffee as well,” says Martine de Vogel.
In a variety of homes, visitors can see how different materials, colours and finishes come to life, from wood and concrete to leather and steel. They hear directly from the residents about the process, from the initial consultation right through to installation.
The tour demonstrates how a staircase becomes part of everyday life: how it feels, sounds and contributes to the atmosphere in the home.

“We want people to experience what a staircase renovation really does for a home,” continues Steyvers. “It’s only in a real home that you can see how a staircase enhances the atmosphere and style of the interior. That’s what makes this tour unique in our industry.”
Never before has an open house tour been organised that focuses entirely on staircases. Visitors can see, feel and experience the impact of a staircase renovation in a real-life setting – from materials and finishes to lighting and the stories behind each staircase.
“A staircase is both a daily sight and a daily feature. That is precisely why it must excel in design, quality and comfort,” says Rick Steyvers, managing director of Upstairs. “During the Open House Tour, our customers themselves demonstrate what ‘The Beauty of Perfection’ means in practice: high-quality materials, safe steps and a finish that pays attention to even the smallest details.”
