Exercise is good for you – and walking up and down the stairs is a simple way to get some exercise every day. But did you know that stairs also need to meet certain ergonomic requirements to be comfortable and safe? Follow these 3 tips to make your stairs ergonomically sound.

3 Tips Voor Een Ergonomisch Verantwoorde Trap E1494861093413 750X350jpg
1. Check the dimensions

Stairs are only comfortable to walk on if the proportions are right. These are the ergonomic guidelines:

  • Height (step-up): ideally 17 cm, permitted between 14 and 20 cm.

  • Depth (front): ideal 29 cm, permitted between 26 and 32 cm.

  • Sum of height + depth: between 44 and 46 cm.

Important: the height and depth must be consistent across all steps. Any variations may cause people to trip or feel uncomfortable.

2. Provide a sturdy handrail

A staircase with a handrail isn’t just more comfortable to use, it’s also safer. Choose a sturdy handrail with a good grip and the right height. When you have your staircase renovated by Upstairs, you can have a new handrail fitted straight away to match your stair covering. This way, you combine comfort, safety and style.

3. Choose stairs with anti-slip coating

Ergonomics and safety go hand in hand. A slippery staircase increases the risk of slipping, particularly with heavy use. Upstairs stair tread covers feature the Original Top Layer, which contains a subtle aluminium alloy. This provides an invisible anti-slip effect that makes your stairs less slippery and therefore safer.

There are rules that apply to spiral staircases too. A minimum diameter of 160 cm is required to ensure the staircase is comfortable to use.

Conclusion

An ergonomic staircase makes everyday use more pleasant, safer and more durable. With the right dimensions, a sturdy handrail and non-slip surfacing, you are guaranteed both comfort and safety.
