The combination of black and white creates a striking effect. This can sometimes make it difficult to use this colour scheme in a stylish way. With these tips, you can turn your black-and-white staircase into a real eye-catcher!

Do: keep it simple

Black and white really come into their own in a calm and ‘clean’ interior. Natural materials, such as marble and wood, and simple colours complement the minimalist look of a black-and-white staircase perfectly. So paint the walls around the staircase in soft colours or simply leave them white. This will make the staircase stand out and create a harmonious and stylish whole.

Don't: too many different colours

Bright colours can be cheerful and summery, but too many colours can quickly become overwhelming in your interior. So try not to include too many different striking colours around the black-and-white staircase. Keep the walls neutral and be careful with overly flashy interior accessories. This will prevent your staircase from looking cheap or getting lost in the chaos.

Do: black and white staircase from luxury materials

Opt for high-quality, luxurious materials. At Upstairs, you can choose from a wide range of black and light-coloured, almost entirely white stair coverings. If you prefer a classic style, you could, for example, choose steps in Raja Black. This material has a natural, veined marble texture that pairs perfectly with white risers. Finish off this look with white risers or a white banister to complete the picture. Or opt for a sparkling white staircase with Bright Marble. You can then create a fully black and white staircase by choosing risers in the black colour Coal.

Don't: style clash

Before you opt for a black-and-white staircase, it’s worth considering whether it will actually suit the rest of your interior. This contrasting colour scheme doesn’t suit every style. In a country-style interior, for example, where colours such as beige and blue predominate, a staircase in bold colours won’t look as good. In that case, you’re better off choosing a rustic staircase in Mississippi Pine.

Don't: paint stairs black and white

For many people, painting their stairs black and white might seem like an attractive option. It’s not a bad idea in itself, as there are now paints specially formulated for stairs that are more scratch-resistant and therefore last longer. Bear in mind, however, that you use the stairs several times a day (on average seven times a day), which means the paint will wear away quickly. It would be a shame to waste all the time and effort you’ve put into making your black and white staircase look so lovely.

Do: stair railing black, a stylish stair finish

Stylish in its simplicity: the combination of black and white. Do you have white walls and a light-coloured floor? Then opt for black stair treads and a black banister to create a striking contrast. Together, they form a bold, industrial look. White risers add a touch of calm. What more could you ask for?

Do: overlay steps in black or white

A better solution is therefore to renovate your stairs using stair tread covers. These are made from HDF and finished with our Upstairs Original Top Coat. This ensures that your stair treads are not only sturdy, but also scratch- and wear-resistant. This means you won’t have to sand and paint your stairs again in a few years’ time. Would you also like a lifelong solution for your stair stringers? Then have them renovated by Upstairs too, so you’ll never have to sand and paint them again. The stair tread covers are available in a wide range of colours, including black and white. Feel free to take a look at our extensive collection.
