A stair tread may seem like a minor detail, but it plays a major role in the safety and durability of your staircase. It is designed to protect the stairs from wear and tear and to improve safety by providing extra grip.

What is a stair tread?

It is a strip that is fitted to the front of the step, providing extra grip and protection against wear and tear. Stair nosings are available in a variety of materials, colours and designs, so they can complement a range of interior styles.

Stair tread vs. stair runner

A stair profile should not be confused with a stair runner. In the past, stairs were often fitted with a carpet runner, secured with rods. This provided grip and dampened noise, but was difficult to keep clean and wore out quickly. That is why you hardly ever see this in modern homes anymore. A stair profile is a much more practical and durable alternative.

A stair profile protects your stairs

The front part of the step bears the brunt of the wear and tear. A stair tread protects this area from wear and tear, thereby extending the life of your stairs. It also provides extra grip, reducing the risk of slipping.

Types of stair treads
  • Black stair profile – popular for its sleek, modern look. Looks great with wood, laminate and even tiles.

  • Laminate stair profile – fits perfectly with stairs finished in laminate and creates a uniform look.

  • Rubber stair profile – highly durable and slip-resistant. Ideal for households with children or elderly people.

The Upstairs alternative

Although stair treads are functional, they often lack style. With a staircase renovation by Upstairs, they are no longer needed: our stair tread covers come as standard with the scratch- and wear-resistant Upstairs Original Top Layer, which features an anti-slip finish.

Would you still like an extra accent or a tactile strip on the step? Then choose our Upstairs Safety Profile (UVP) or the Steeltwist with a blue steel nose. This way, you can combine safety with design.
