Do you have a steep staircase in your home? Whilst this can be practical when space is limited, it also presents certain challenges. A steep staircase takes up less space, but is often more difficult – and sometimes even unsafe – to use. In this blog, you’ll find out exactly what a steep staircase is, what its pros and cons are, and how you can make a steep staircase safer and more comfortable.

What is a steep staircase?

Whether a staircase is steep depends on the ratio between the height and depth of the steps. In technical terms:

  • Rise = the height of the step.
  • Tread depth = the depth of the step (excluding the nosing).
  • Nose = the protruding part of the step.

A staircase is considered easy to walk on when the riser height is between 17 and 20 cm and the tread width is between 21 and 29 cm. On a steep staircase, these measurements are closer together and the angle of inclination is often 45° – which is quite steep!

The advantages of a steep staircase
  • Space-saving – ideal for small homes or older houses where the staircase has simply been built that way.
  • Compact design – fits well in narrow hallways or outbuildings.
Disadvantages of steep stairs (and solutions)

Stairs that are too steep can be dangerous, especially for children and the elderly. Fortunately, there are solutions to make your stairs safer and more comfortable:

  • Non-slip surface – reduces the risk of slipping.
  • Safe handrail – provides extra support. Choose a handrail that suits your staircase renovation.
  • Open staircase – looks lighter and can be slightly steeper than a closed staircase.
  • Alternative: spiral staircase – in some cases easier to walk on and space-saving.
