Your staircase gets a lot of use every day, and that inevitably takes its toll. So cleaning it regularly is simply part of the job, especially if you want it to remain a showpiece in your home. Read on to find out the best way to do it!
A wooden staircase has to endure a lot of wear and tear. Fortunately, cleaning a wooden staircase isn’t difficult at all. For dust and smudges, all you need is a soft cloth and a little water! Of course, make sure you don’t scrub or use harsh cleaning products. That’s not good for the wood. Products containing soap are also not recommended. Soap residue left behind actually attracts new dirt!
You’ll be most effective if you start cleaning your stairs from the top. This way, you’ll sweep all the dirt from top to bottom, so that you can finally wipe away the last bits of dirt at the bottom. This applies whether you’re cleaning with a (damp) cloth or using a vacuum cleaner. Although cleaning your stairs with a vacuum cleaner is quite a chore, especially if you don’t have a lightweight model!
Does your staircase look a bit worn and in need of a thorough refresh? Then it’s time to give it a fresh coat of varnish. Fortunately, it’s not that difficult a job. First, use a degreaser to remove old layers of varnish or oil, then apply a new top coat. The new coat of varnish protects the wood, ensuring your staircase retains its attractive appearance for longer.
