Carpet dampens the sound of footsteps, feels nice and warm, and prevents slipping. It is also flexible and soft, which might make it seem like the ideal choice for covering your stairs. Nothing could be further from the truth; we’d be happy to tell you about the other options available for covering your stairs.

Carpet on your stair treads?

Many people choose to carpet their stairs, partly because of the cosy atmosphere it creates, which makes it a good fit for many interiors. However, not all types of carpet are suitable for use on stairs. You should therefore always seek advice from a specialist if you are considering carpeting your stairs.

Disadvantages of carpet on your stairs

There are a lot of drawbacks to having carpet on your stairs:

  • All that walking up and down causes the carpet to wear out quickly and leaves signs of wear on your stairs. Often, the centre of the step ends up looking more faded than the sides, and that doesn’t look very nice
  • Have you accidentally spilled something on your stairs? Cleaning carpet is quite a chore!
  • Carpet is a magnet for dust and dirt – making it very unhygienic and a nuisance for people with allergies.
  • Carpet is very difficult to remove. It often takes a lot of effort to remove your old stair covering first before you can fit your new covering.
Vinyl flooring

If you choose vinyl as the flooring for your stairs, you’re opting for a durable and easy-to-maintain solution. Vinyl can withstand heavy use, is resistant to dirt and is water-resistant. The downside of vinyl is that it has a cold, clinical look and therefore doesn’t really fit in with the interior of a home.

Our advice: Covering your stairs

Our advice: have your stairs fitted with stair tread covers. Thanks to this unique step-over-step system, we can make your staircase look as good as new again. What we do is fit stair tread covers over your existing steps. The steps are finished with our Upstairs Original Top Coat. This top coat is harder and many times more scratch-resistant than laminate, meaning it will last for years without wearing out. The biggest advantage is that there is no need to alter the structure of your old staircase and that the work is almost always completed within a single day.

The stair treads are available in a range of colour designs (‘decors’) featuring various wood textures, as well as leather, concrete and marble finishes, and are suitable for both open and closed staircases. This means you’re sure to find a design that matches your flooring or the rest of your interior décor.
