When thinking about staircase renovation, you probably immediately think of the steps, the banister or perhaps the lighting. But there is another element that is often overlooked yet has a significant impact on the overall look: the stair stringers. This part certainly deserves attention if you’re looking to renovate your staircase.
The stringer is the side of the staircase. In a traditional staircase, two stringers provide support for the steps. In modern staircases, this structural function is sometimes less important, and the stringer mainly serves a decorative purpose. Nevertheless, this component plays a major role in determining the overall look of your staircase.
Most staircases have a stringer on both sides, but in modern interiors we are increasingly seeing staircases with just one stringer, or even none at all. In the latter case, the result is what is known as a floating staircase. Nevertheless, the stringer – whether you have one, two or none – remains an important design element. The material, colour and finish determine how stylish your staircase looks.
Would you like to add some style to your staircase with stair stringers? If so, there are plenty of options:
- Classic wood finish for a warm and timeless look.
- Robust materials such as concrete-look, leather or blue steel for a contemporary effect.
- Combinations – for example, a blue steel staircase with wooden stringers – for an exciting contrast.
Stair stringers offer plenty of options. For example, you could choose the same finish as the steps to create a harmonious look, or opt for a contrasting colour to give the staircase a striking accent. Plain white (RAL 9010 or RAL 9016) is also popular: it gives your staircase an airy feel and makes the room appear larger.
Are you planning a complete staircase renovation? If so, it’s a good idea to include the stringers in your plans from the outset. This ensures a cohesive design where all components – steps, handrail and stringers – fit together seamlessly. The result: a staircase that is not only functional but also a stylish feature of your interior.
