The staircase formula is a simple calculation that allows you to check whether a staircase is comfortable to walk up and down. It’s useful if you’re designing a staircase yourself or having one installed, as the wrong proportions can result in a staircase that’s too steep or uncomfortable to use.
The formula revolves around the ratio between the outgoing figure (O) and the incoming figure (A):
Â
-
Rise (R) = the vertical distance between two steps
-
Riser (A) = the width of the step
Â
The formula is:
2 x O + A = between 570 and 630 mm
If the result falls within this range, you can be sure that the stairs are comfortable and safe to walk on.
A staircase should not only look good, but also be ergonomically sound. Steps that are too steep put strain on your knees and joints, whilst steps that are too narrow are simply impractical. By using the staircase formula, you ensure both comfort and safety in everyday use.
Once your staircase has been installed, you can make it even safer with durable stair treads. The Upstairs Original Top Layer provides a non-slip surface, is scratch- and wear-resistant, and instantly makes your staircase more child-friendly.
