Refurbishing your stairs yourself in 5 steps

Would you rather tackle your wooden staircase yourself? This step-by-step guide will get you a long way:

  1. Remove the old coating
Remove the old stair covering using a filling knife, scraper or paint stripper. Then sand the stairs thoroughly to create a smooth surface.
  2. Remove all dust from the
stairs Remove all sanding residue with a vacuum cleaner and a slightly damp cloth. A clean surface is crucial for a smooth finish
  3. Choose your finish
Are you going to paint or varnish? Start with a primer, sand lightly and finish with 2 to 3 coats of paint or varnish. Tip: skip every other step so that the stairs remain accessible whilst you’re painting.
  4. Allow to dry and check
Once dry, clean the stairs and touch up any spots. Don’t wait too long to do this to avoid colour differences.
  5. Add extras
Consider anti-slip strips or LED lighting. Please note: lighting can only be integrated during an Upstairs staircase renovation, as the wiring is neatly concealed within the cladding.
