A spiral staircase is a staircase that winds upwards around a central spindle. That is the main difference between it and a spiral staircase: the latter has no central spindle. Because the steps are tightly attached to the spindle, a spiral staircase takes up very little space. If you opt for an open spiral staircase, you can, as it were, look right through the steps – this visually enlarges the space and creates an open feeling.
