Are you considering a staircase renovation using HPL? If so, there are a few pitfalls you’d be wise to avoid. We’ll tell you what to look out for and would be happy to provide you with more information about our alternative: the Upstairs Original top layer!
HPL, or High-Pressure Laminate, is a hard board compressed under high pressure, made up of laminated layers of wood fibre or paper and resin. HPL is a budget-friendly solution for renovating your staircase without having to install a completely new one. There is quite a lot of freedom of choice in terms of designs, but there are a few pitfalls you should avoid when renovating a staircase with HPL:
Â
- Straight steps
Make sure you have the right steps. It is important that the steps are straight and not rounded, as HPL sheets are not flexible. - Check the boards
Check in advance that there is no damage or colour variation in the boards. It may sound obvious, but an extra check will save you from having to do the work twice. - Wait 48 hours
Don’t start your staircase renovation straight away. Leave the boards to rest for at least 48 hours before installing them. Changes in temperature or humidity can cause HPL to expand or contract. And naturally, you’ll want to avoid that!
With an Upstairs staircase renovation, there are no pitfalls to worry about – we’ve already taken care of them for you! The core of our stair treads consists of fibres that are compressed under high pressure into hard panels. These are then finished with a special top layer: the Upstairs Original top layer. This is a hard, transparent resin that gives the stair tread its desired look. The end result is a stair tread that is low-maintenance, non-slip and resistant to scratches and wear. Expertly installed by our fitters, you are guaranteed a staircase that will last a lifetime!
