A banister may seem like a minor detail, but it is essential for both the safety and the appearance of your staircase. There is a wide range to choose from: from wood to stainless steel and from leather to blue steel. How do you make the right choice to suit your staircase and interior? We’re happy to offer you a few tips.

Which material to choose?

The material has a significant impact on both the appearance and ease of use of your banister. Some popular choices:

  • Wood – versatile, warm and timeless.

  • Stainless steel – sleek, stylish and low-maintenance.

  • Leather – luxurious and full of character, with a unique look.

  • Blue steel – rugged and industrial, for a striking eye-catcher.

You should also choose a colour that complements your staircase or, alternatively, contrasts nicely with the wall next to it.

Tip: the shades from our Earth Collection (including Sand and Truffle) go beautifully with the Upstairs designs.

Please note: Upstairs banisters are only available as part of a staircase renovation. Our advisor will be happy to show you the options during an appointment.

Banisters at an open staircase

A banister provides support and helps prevent accidents. A sturdy banister is essential, particularly on open staircases – which are often perceived as less safe. Should you lose your footing, the banister offers immediate support. Safe and stylish, then.

Match the handrail to your staircase

The right banister completes the overall look. A black-coated banister, for example, pairs beautifully with finishes such as Blended Cement. For a rugged look, you could opt for blue steel or leather, whilst wood creates a warm, inviting feel. Whichever style you choose, we always have a banister that perfectly complements your renovated staircase.

A staircase with or without handrail?

Don’t have a banister at the moment? Then a staircase renovation is the perfect opportunity to sort this out straight away. That way, you can combine a beautiful new staircase with the safety of a sturdy banister – and you’ll be all set for years to come.
