The safety of your staircase starts with a sturdy handrail. Not only does it provide support when climbing the stairs, but it also offers a firm grip should you ever lose your footing. In this article, you can read more about the correct height, installation and options for a safe handrail.
According to the government’s Building Regulations, a banister must be installed at a height of between 60 and 100 cm, measured from the front edge of the step (approximately hip height). For staircases spanning more than 1.5 metres, at least one banister is required.
- Determining the height – Position the handrail between 60 and 100 cm from the front edge of the step.
- Fixing points – Install a fixing point at least every 90 cm.
- Strong materials – Use screws and wall plugs suitable for the wall.
- Sturdy wall – Check that the wall is suitable and avoid pipes or cables.
- Distance from wall – Leave 4–5 cm of space to allow for a good grip on the handrail.
- Comfortable grip – Choose a diameter of 33–43 mm.
- Finishing – Fit end caps and brackets for safety and a neat finish.
- Straight installation – Use a spirit level for a straight fit.
- Pre-drill – Prevent the wood or wall from splitting.
- Testing – Check that the handrail is securely fastened and do this regularly.
It’s obviously good to know how to install a banister and at what height it should be fixed to ensure it’s safe. The most important thing is that everyone in the house can use the stairs safely. Are you a bit shorter, or is someone in your family a bit shorter? If so, choose the ideal height for maximum safety, so that the banister is safe for everyone in the house.
